چکیده

The odd-even staggering of nuclear masses was recognized in the early days of nuclear physics. Recently, a similar e ect was discovered in other nite fermion systems, such as ultrasmall metallic grains and metal clusters. It is believed that the staggering in nuclei and grains is primarily due to pairing correlations (superconductivity), while in clusters it is caused by the Jahn-Teller e ect. We nd that, for light and medium-mass nuclei, the staggering has two components. The rst one originates from pairing while the second, comparable in magnitude, has its roots in the deformed mean eld.

Isospin dependence in the odd-even staggering of nuclear binding energies.

The FRS-ESR facility at GSI provides unique conditions for precision measurements of large areas on the nuclear mass surface in a single experiment. Values for masses of 604 neutron-deficient nuclides (30 < or = Z < or = 92) were obtained with a typical uncertainty of 30 microu. The masses of 114 nuclides were determined for the first time. The odd-even staggering (OES) of nuclear masses was sy...

Role of Bcs-type Pairing in Light Deformed Nuclei: a Relativistic Mean Field Approach

The odd-even staggering (OES) of nuclear masses has been recognized since the early days of nuclear physics. It manifests itself in the fact that the binding energy of a system with an odd particle number is lower than the arithmetic mean of the energies of the two neighboring even-particle-number systems. Häkkinen et al. 1, using the density-functional theory, argued that light alkali-metal cl...

Pairing Gaps from Nuclear Mean–Field Models

We discuss the pairing gap, a measure for nuclear pairing correlations, in chains of spherical, semi–magic nuclei in the framework of self–consistent nuclear mean–field models. The equations for the conventional BCS model and the approximate projection–before–variation Lipkin–Nogami method are formulated in terms of local density functionals for the effective interaction. We calculate the Lipki...

Mean-field and blocking effects on odd-even mass differences and rotational motion of nuclei

The odd-even differences of nuclear masses are strongly influenced by mean-field and odd-nucleon blocking effects. When such effects are taken into account, the determination of the pairing interaction strength needs to be modified, resulting in larger pairing gaps. This method leads to an improved description for both moments of inertia and backbending frequencies of rotational bands, with no ...

The Odd-Even Z Isospin Anomaly In The Yields From High-Energy Reactions

The expression "odd-even Z isospin anomaly" – introduced by L. B. Yang et al. [1] in 1999 – indicates the experimental evidence that the elemental even-odd effect decreases with increasing neutron-richness of the system. Since 1999, the analysis of experimental production cross-sections of final products of several nuclear reactions at very different energies confirmed the existence of this eff...
